Building Confidence & Connection for those who have felt a little different in social situations

Have you ever walked into a room full of people and immediately felt like everyone else got a manual that you never received? Do you find yourself overthinking every conversation after it ends, replaying what you said, wondering if it came out wrong, or questioning "why did I say that"? Do you struggle to make friends even though you genuinely want connection? Do social situations leave you drained, anxious, or feeling more alone than you did before you walked in? If so you are in the right place.

Social connection is one of the most fundamental human needs and for many people navigating the social world does not come naturally, and this increased significantly after COVID. Now this also does not mean it cannot be learned, practiced, and genuinely improved. At Harper's Haven Marriage, Family and Child Counseling Corp. we specialize in social skills therapy for children, adolescents, and adults throughout California via telehealth. We help people build confidence in social situations using evidence based approaches that actually work.

Who Can Benefit From Social Skills Therapy?

Social skills therapy can be used for many different people and ages.  You do not have to have a formal diagnosis to benefit from this work. You simply have to recognize that social situations are harder for you than they seem to be for other people and that you are ready to do something about it.

Children who may benefit:
Children who struggle to make and keep friends, who have difficulty reading social cues, who frequently misread other children's intentions, who tend to play alone not by choice but because they do not know how to enter group play, who have frequent conflict with peers because they do not know how to navigate disagreement, and children whose teachers report social difficulties in the classroom.

Adolescents who may benefit:
Teenagers who feel chronically left out, who avoid social situations including parties, school events, and group activities because of anxiety, who struggle with peer relationships, who have been bullied or socially rejected, who find online interaction significantly easier than face to face connection, and teens whose social difficulties are affecting their mood, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

Adults who may benefit:
Adults who struggle with social anxiety in work settings, social gatherings, or dating situations. Adults who have always felt like they do not quite fit in no matter how hard they try. Adults who find networking, small talk, and professional relationship building painfully difficult. Adults who have been told they come across as awkward, cold, or hard to read when they are genuinely trying to connect. Adults who want meaningful relationships but do not know how to build them, and adults who recognize that their social difficulties are linked to early experiences, trauma, or neurodevelopmental differences that were never addressed.

How We Help:

Our approach to social skills therapy is integrative, evidence based, and individualized. We do not run through a checklist of social rules and call it therapy. We work to understand the specific barriers that are getting in your way, address the underlying anxiety or beliefs that are driving the difficulty, and build skills through structured practice and eventually exposure outside of the therapy room.
